Vertical Platform Lifts for Disabled Access in Commercial Spaces

The Tower Lifts team installed its first platform lifts in 2006; back then vertical lifts for disabled access were pretty basic and utilitarian. A lot has changed in the intervening decades and the wheelchair lifts we currently design for commercial clients are good-looking, sleek, high performance and have a much smaller footprint than the early models.

The vertical platform lift, in particular, has undergone a radical transformation and is now very similar in experience to a conventional passenger lift. Unlike the passenger lift, though, vertical platform lifts do not require a lift shaft for installation. They are installed in their own self-supporting shaft which makes them simple and quick to install in busy commercial spaces.

What is a Vertical Platform Lift?

Vertical lifts for disabled access look very similar to a passenger lift. They have a closed cabin and are designed to carry a passenger in a wheelchair or mobility scooter. Also known a low pit lift, these vertical lifts can be installed within a 50mm pit or with 2500mm headroom. They travel at 0.15 metres per second, through up to 6 floor levels.

The platform lift is designed for flexibility, safety, and speed of installation. Its self-supporting shaft can be customised to match the interior design of the building, and there is far less construction work involved than in the installation of a passenger lift. We can normally install vertical lifts for disabled access in 3-4 days, depending on the complexity of the job.

Energy Efficient Lifts for Disabled Access

Energy efficiency is a priority for us, and we ensure that all our installations are energy efficient. The MRL drive system employed in a low-pit lift ensures that there is significantly less energy consumed in its use. Additionally, the cabin is fitted with long-lasting LED lights in the cabin, and we can use LED diffusers if preferred.

Commercial Vertical Platform Lifts

The Equality Act 2010 requires that employers, shops, schools and local authorities take positive steps to make their environment inclusive. This means fitting lifts for disabled access in order to ensure that anyone who is mobility impaired has the same access as anyone else using the building.

Tower Lifts has installed vertical platform lifts in schools, art galleries, hotels, shops, and workplaces across the UK. Our bespoke design and installation service offers commercial clients a range of professional benefits:

Design consultation and guidance

Customisation of cabin and exterior

Lift installation and testing

Full safety compliance

Platform Lifts Maintenance and Repairs

Our vertical lifts for disabled access offer durability, consistent performance excellence, and ongoing reliability. We want to keep them that way, and so we recommend tailored maintenance contracts for commercial clients. Each contract is based on a detailed assessment of the age, maintenance history, positioning and volume of lift use experienced. So long as the usage is not excessively heavy, servicing would normally take place every 6 months.

Your maintenance contract can include emergency repairs, ensuring 24/7 attention should your lift need urgent attention. This means that your business should never be without disabled access for employees, visitors, or customers.

Tower Lifts is an Established UK Provider of Lifts for Disabled Access

For 2 decades now, the Tower Lifts team has been designing and installing bespoke vertical lifts for disabled access in commercial environments. Our team is made up of factory trained engineers who bring years of experience to their work. Tower Lifts is an ISO9001:2015 Lift Cert and UKAS approved company adhering to all current Lift Regulations.

5 Benefits of Installing an Elevator in a House

Can Residential Lifts Improve Your Quality of Life?

For some clients, installing an elevator in a house can have negative connotations to do with the onset of age. The Tower Lifts team, having designed and installed hundreds of residential lifts over the past two decades, sees it differently. And so do our clients, once their home lift’s in place. The majority are delighted with both the look and functionality of their new design feature, and most of them find the technology totally liberating.

Why Install an Elevator in a House?

There’s no one reason for deciding to install a lift in the home. For some couples it’s about future-proofing the family home to ensure a long and happy life living in a place they love. For others, it’s about adapting an environment to provide the access they need as a wheelchair user, or as someone with limited mobility. Increasingly, installing a residential lift is a lifestyle choice providing a luxury feature that makes their home unique.

What Kind of Elevator?

The growth in the home lift sector has led to a greater range of affordable and innovative technologies to suit your specific requirements. At Tower Lifts we create bespoke lift designs to match the needs of the client and the environment of their home. It gives us enormous pleasure to be able to offer a spectrum of possibilities, all of them customisable:

Luxury Home Lifts

Scenic Lifts for the Home

Vertical Platform Lifts – designed for wheelchair users.

Glass Lifts

Stair Lifts for Wheelchairs

Platform Inclined Lifts for Spiral Staircases

Through Floor Lifts

Step Lifts – for wheelchair users needing access up short flights of steps.

Dumbwaiter Lifts – for transporting food, shopping, laundry between floors.

Our designers make a site visit to discuss the most appropriate lift for a client and consider the design in relation to its environment. We actively encourage clients to participate in the design process.

5 Benefits of Installing an Elevator in a House

Some of the following benefits are expected, others are more of a surprise to many of our clients:

1. Enhanced Access to Your Home

This, of course, is always the goal of installing an elevator in a house. However, the range of options open to designers and installers means that we can create stylish, ergonomic, and sustainable solutions. Introducing a new design feature into your home provides both a functional and an aesthetic benefit which will be enjoyed by guests and family members for years to come.

2. The Home as a Safe Environment

If you are experiencing more difficulty tackling steps and stairs, a residential elevator removes a number of hazards from your living environment and replaces them with a safe and controlled way to access every part of your home. Family members will enjoy peace of mind, and – as a user – you’ll regain the independence of travelling between floors without worrying that you’ll miss your footing, or trip as a result.

3. An Increase in Your Home’s Value

For estate agents a home lift is nothing but a positive which will most definitely help to sell your home. Not only that, the fact that a lift is a sought-after feature, whether for access or luxury, means that the value of the property increases automatically. An elevator in a house that has been designed to enhance the overall style and aesthetic of the property offers a unique proposition to buyers and gives your home a real edge in a crowded market.

4. Once Installed It’s Easy to Maintain

Home lifts are built to be durable, and they get a good deal less wear and tear than their public counterparts. An elevator in a house is designed to last for years, but Tower Lifts installers would strongly recommend regular servicing. This guarantees that you lift continues to operate efficiently and economically, at peak performance.

We offer bespoke maintenance contracts which are tailored to your lift and usage. The contract includes emergency repairs so if there is a problem, you know that you can access repairs 24/7.

5. An Increase in Wellbeing

There’s no reason why we should carry heavy objects from one floor to another or feel compelled to take the stairs when we would prefer an alternative form of transport. Installing an elevator in a house isn’t just a practical necessity, it’s also a choice about how we wish to live, and the way our environment responds to our needs.

About Tower Lifts

Since 2006 Tower Lifts has been a leading UK designer and installer of residential lifts. After so many years working in this sector, we’re passionate about helping clients to achieve their vision, access their homes in the way they want, and extend the potential of their living environment. Our designers can be relied upon to come up with an innovative and creative range of home lift solutions.

6 Steps to Installing a Platform Lift

Tower Lifts designers and installers have been installing platform lifts for businesses, public buildings, and private properties in London since 2006. With nearly 2 decades of experience to bring to the task, we can be relied upon to deliver a reliable and efficient installation process. In this article we look at the 6 steps involved in our platform lift installation London service.

What is a Platform Lift?

Platform lifts are designed with wheelchair users in mind. They travel over shorter distances than ordinary passenger lifts and maintain a constant speed of 0.15MPS. The innovative platform lift is built without a lift shaft, making it flexible enough to fit into most environments. Its modular structure can be installed quickly and efficiently externally or internally.

What Kind of Platform Lift Installation London?

There are a number of different types of platform lift which can be used for different tasks. These are designed to be bespoke to the operating environment, and are custom built to seamlessly integrate with the aesthetics and style of their surroundings.

Platform Stair Lift. The standard stair lift model is difficult for wheelchair users to access, as it requires them to leave their chair. The platform stair lift allows wheelchair users to roll onto the platform, and travel smoothly and securely along a straight or curved staircase. When not in use, the platform folds back to allow foot traffic.

Step Lift. Designed for use indoors or outdoors, the elegant step lift transports users up short flights of steps, or over split level flooring. This model is ideal for steps leading to a front door, or foyer. Alternatively, the step lift is now being used to provide access to gardens and raised patios.

Vertical Platform Lift. This looks similar to a traditional passenger lift but is designed to carry a wheelchair user. The controls are customised to be easy to access, and the design is normally glass panelling for the passenger cabin. A vertical platform lift can travel through 4 floors, and installation is either external or internal.

1. Site Visit and Tower Lifts Consultation

We offer all clients a site visit, in order that our engineers can understand the environment, and provide guidance on the best platform lift installation for your needs. This will take into account the size of the space available for installation, any customisation needed, and the number of lifts required to provide access for wheelchair users – this is particularly important in a home environment.

2. Detailed Quotation for Installation

Once we understand what you need your platform lift to do, and where it is to be installed, we’ll provide a detailed quotation for all the work. We’ll also include information about the timescale involved from quote acceptance to the completion of your platform lift installation.

3. Confirm and Accept Lift Specification

Tower Lifts designers go to work on developing a detailed platform lift specification, including drawings, dimensions, and loadings. These are sent to you prior to being forwarded on to our manufacturing provider. We ask clients to check the specification carefully and let us know if there’s anything they would like amended.

4. Schedule Installation

Your project manager will keep you informed of every stage of the process, and schedule installation. This will include a pre-installation visit as well as the installation of your platform lift. Any work that needs to take place prior to installation will be carried out efficiently, and within a clear timeframe agreed with our client.

5. Platform Lift Installation

Platform lift installation can normally be completed within 3-5 days, dependent on the complexity of the process. There is normally no need to erect scaffolding, as the modular structure is designed to be installed from bottom to top. Once installation is complete, we’ll go through a handover process, and provide documentation including LOLER certification.

6. Schedule Maintenance Checks

Platform lifts are durable and reliable; they’re built to withstand all kinds of weather, and constant use. We always recommend scheduled maintenance, though, to ensure that the high performance of the lift is maintained. Commercial clients require regular maintenance checks in order to remain LOLER compliant. Our lift servicing and repairs contracts are tailored to each individual client and include 24/7 emergency lift repair.

Platform lifts for Residential and Commercial Environments

Across the UK, it’s good to see that the installation of platform lifts for wheelchairs is becoming a commonplace sight. Towns and cities are gradually working towards becoming fully inclusive environments, and homes of all sizes and shapes are enjoying enhanced access. Thanks to the development of innovative platform lift technology, installing vertical transport for wheelchair users is now affordable in commercial and residential settings.

Platform lifts for wheelchairs offer passengers privacy, independence, and access to multiple floors of a building. Wheelchair lifts don’t require a lift shaft which means they’re easy and quick to install. It’s an access solution that can be adapted to virtually any environment. Tower Lifts engineers design bespoke platform lifts– and they have not yet found an architectural challenge that couldn’t be overcome.

Types of Platform Lifts for Wheelchairs

Adaptability is the name of the game when it comes to platform lifts. Tower Lifts engineers have fitted indoor and external wheelchair lifts, in historic buildings, hotels, schools, residential apartments, warehouses, homes, hospitals and shops. They can be customised to accommodate the needs of users and provide operational autonomy. Whilst all our installations are bespoke, the platform lifts for wheelchairs we install include:

Vertical Platform Lift. Similar in appearance to a traditional passenger lift, the vertical platform lift runs on a hydraulic or electric system, providing wheelchair users with access to up to 4 floors. The controls are DDA compliant, and the lift runs at a speed of 0.15MPS. They are operated using constant pressure controls.

Step Lift. An elegant solution to inclusive access when it comes to split level flooring or short flights of stairs. The step lift is operated by constant pressure controls and the transport is both reliable and durable. The step lift can be installed externally for steps leading to a front entrance, for example, or split-level gardens.

Wheelchair Stair Lift. This lift is designed for transporting wheelchair users up straight or curved staircases. When required, the platform lowers allowing a wheelchair to roll directly from the floor to the platform. Safety rails lower automatically for safe transport. When not in use, the platform folds back to allow for foot traffic access.

Dumbwaiter Lift. Whilst not strictly platform lifts for wheelchairs, dumbwaiters have an important role to play in the home. This small cabinet goods lift is invaluable for transporting shopping, luggage, food, or laundry between floors. The lift can be placed at a height that suits, and there are a number of sizes to choose from.

Commercial Benefits of Platform Lifts for Wheelchairs

Our commercial clients tell us that they prefer platform lifts to ramps because they take up less floor space and, when regularly maintained, offer users a better experience. They appreciate the substantial additional footfall platform lifts attract, and they appreciate the high level of safety awareness that comes as standard when a platform lift is installed.

Bespoke design and installation of platform stair lifts help the commercial sector to comply with Health & Safety and Manual Handing regulations.

Residential Benefits of Platform Lifts for Wheelchairs

Our residential clients appreciate the ease and additional access that wheelchair lifts for the home provide. Not only do these lifts offer a practical function, they can also be customised to suit the home interior décor. Where lifts are installed in the garden, or as an aid to accessing the front door, they’re seen as a durable and reliable aid to everyday activities.

Experienced Lift Consultants in London

Over the past two decades, Tower Lifts has built an enviable reputation for providing London lift consultancy. We’ve also been lucky enough to work with a range of extraordinary clients on fascinating bespoke design projects. From heritage properties, to art galleries and global retail brands, we’ve created unique, stylish and high performance lifts to serve passengers across the capital.

What Do Lift Consultants Do?

Normally a client will approach us when:

They’re looking for a unique, luxury lift

The architecture requires a bespoke lift design

A client want special features integrated

Integration is required with branding, or surroundings

For bespoke lifts, our design team will normally spend a while with the client ensuring that they understand the brief. Then they’ll survey the operating environment and start to draft design ideas. No matter whether we’re working in a domestic, industrial or retail environment we always invest time in the early stages to ensure that we achieve a lift which meets the vision of the client.

Examples of Bespoke Lifts in London

Over the years we’ve created bespoke stairlifts, dumb waiters, and passenger lifts.

Here’s a selection of some of the most memorable projects we’ve completed as Lift Consultants in London:

1. Ten Trinity Square

Tower Lifts design team were asked to create a bespoke circular platform lift, capable of carrying a grand piano. Visitors to the Rotunda Lounge at Ten Trinity Square were treated to the spectacle of a piano that rose out of the floor whilst they were enjoying in the afternoon tea!

2. The Beauty Workshop, Selfridges

Our installation team has been busy at Selfridges London store over the last few years. Most recently we’ve created a bespoke passenger lift, specifically for the use of clients of the Beauty Workshop. This luxury transport was styled to reflect the styling of its operating environment.

3. The Barbican Art Gallery

Visitors to the Barbican Art Gallery won’t know there’s a step lift available for use – unless they need to use it. Our platform lift installation is styled to seamlessly integrate with its surroundings. When needed it’s elegant mechanism provides access for wheelchair users.

4. San Carlo – Cicchetti, Covent Garden

This Italian restaurant had fallen in love with its legacy dumb waiter lift, so much so it wanted a second installed. The challenge for Tower Lifts was to customise the existing shaft to provide two dumb waiters. Diners now enjoy a speedy service from the kitchen, thanks to Tower Lifts’ ingenuity!

5. Marlborough Place, London

The private owner of this stylish residence wanted a home lift installed. The historic architecture of the property doesn’t lend itself to the creation of a traditional shaft, so Tower Lifts engingeers created a bespoke alternative. Our luxury, machinery directive passenger lift is now fully operational.

Lift Consultants in London Provide a Range of Services

Whilst bespoke lift design and installation is at the ‘showy’ end of what we do, there are also a range of other services we offer:

A Lift Upgrade for London

Whilst it’s easy to take vertical transport for granted, a quick scan of the sheer volume of lifts in use across London is a reminder of the impact they have made on our lives. The oldest London elevator still in use, was installed in Claridges, Mayfair in 1896, and this beautiful OTUS model still looks stunning, and offers an excellent transport experience for visitors to the hotel.

Lift Upgrade Prolongs Service Life

The lift in Claridges continues to work because it has been lovingly maintained. A series of upgrades have transformed the manually operated original into a delightful reminder of the hotel’s luxurious heritage for 21st century passengers. Most upgrades lack the charm of the Claridges example, but they all seek the same conclusion; extended life of an existing lift, rather than a lift replacement.

How do You Know When it’s Time For a Lift Upgrade London?

There’s no one symptom that alerts you to the need for a lift upgrade. It’s normally a number of symptoms that grow, until there’s too many to be ignored. These will normally include:

Concerns that the lift is no longer compliant with current health and safety standards

Spare parts are becoming hard to come by

It’s way beyond budget on repairs

Passengers are complaining about creaks, judders and unreliability

The cabin looks dirty and shabby

The lift doors look old.

Passengers are complaining that the lift isn’t DDA compliant.

If you’re nodding your head at just one of those symptoms, it’s time to acknowledge that your lift needs some care and attention.

A Recommended Lift Company for London

Tower Lifts has been restoring worn out lifts for over a decade now. It’s rare that our skilled engineers are unable to carry out a lift upgrade in London. More often we carry out a thorough inspection and then present a schedule of repairs and components replacements which will keep your lift running reliably, increase energy efficiency, and ensure passenger safety and access.

Lift Maintenance is a Cost-Effective Alternative to Repairs

A lift upgrade for your London lift is certainly a cheaper option than replacing it. Once you have it restored to optimum performance, however, Tower Lifts engineers will recommend that you consider a tailored maintenance package going forward. An annual service ensures ongoing passenger safety, provides running repairs, and gives you timely alerts when lift components need replacing. In the long run it’s a much cheaper alternative to costly emergency call-outs.

Tower Lifts Provide Lift Services Across London

We’re proud to have been a part of London’s lift infrastructure for 15 years now and we’ve made our mark in a number of the capital’s hotels. We have recently installed passenger lifts in the London Moorgate Hotel, the Cumberland, and in the historic St Paul’s Hotel in Hammersmith. Each one reflected the technology, grace and elegance of lift design in the 21st century – and with regular lift upgrades they could still be providing vertical transport for passengers 122 years from now.
