Passenger Lift Install for St Paul’s Hotel, Hammersmith, London

The Tower Lifts team are often asked for creative design solutions and lift installations in beautiful historic buildings, but St Paul’s Hotel in Hammersmith, London was a fascinating environment to work in by any standards. This elegant boutique hotel started life as St Paul’s School and was designed at the end of the nineteenth century by Alfred Waterhouse who was also the architect of the Natural History Museum. This stunning Victorian Gothic building also had a decisive part to play in the course of the Second World War; it was here that Winston Churchill, Eisenhower, and Montgomery met to plan the D-Day landings!

St Paul’s has now been lovingly refurbished as a luxury, boutique hotel, providing stylish accommodation to sightseeing visitors and corporate clients attending exhibitions at the nearby Olympia Exhibition Centre. Tower Lifts was asked to install a three-stop passenger lift for hotel guests, utilising the existing lift shaft which was part of the original architecture.

Reduced Headroom Passenger Lifts

Tower Lifts has a good deal of experience with lift shafts restricting the headroom available for installation. As a consequence of the new Lifts Regulations which was implemented in April 2016, existing buildings requiring lift installations with reduced headroom, must apply to the Government Department of Business, Innovation, and Skills for a derogation order before they can proceed with installation of a low pit lift. In this case the application was successful, and we were able to proceed with the installation.
