Lifts in Existing Buildings
Tower Lifts Retrofit Lifts in Existing Buildings
Much of the work Tower Lifts engineers do involves removing, retrofitting, or installing passenger lifts in existing buildings. Here’s the kind of installation work we’re talking about:
- Installation of an Art Deco lift in Irene House refurbishment, London
- Replacement passenger lift in original lift shaft of Grade 1 listed building, London
- Lift removal from Kew Office Block
- Goods and Passenger Lift for Selfridges Food Hall, London
Lift removal, replacement, or installation changes both the dynamic, and the environment of a building. It allows people to access every floor safely, which can be life-changing for anyone who’s mobility impaired, or a parent of small children. A lift installation also adds value to a building by making it more attractive to investors, tenants, or buyers.
Lift Design That is Bespoke to the Building
When designing lifts for existing buildings, the goal of Tower Lifts designers is to create something that enhances, supports, and integrates perfectly with the environment in which it operates. This may involve overcoming architectural challenges, or fulfilling specific requirements related to aesthetics, branding or function.
Our bespoke passenger lift designs allow for the customisation of virtually every part of the lift system. Whether you want a lift to accommodate 4 or 40 passengers, a scenic glass lift or a disabled access platform lift, we can create the design and install it for you. The lift cabin can include videos, art – or even a sofa – and the system can be secured with key cards or biometrics.
Installing Lifts in Existing Buildings
When working on retrofitting a lift, it’s rare that Tower Lifts engineers are working alone. In the majority of cases, we’re part of a team that may include building managers, clients, architects, or builders. We’re always delighted to contribute our skills as part of that team. Equally, we can project manage a lift retrofit, managing the contractors ourselves.
One of the challenges we encounter regularly when retrofitting lifts is a lack of headroom or reduced pit depth. Our engineers have extensive experience installing MRL lifts in compliance with British and European regulations, such as EN81-2. Where there is no room for a lift shaft, we use platform lift technology to create access using an electric, or hydraulic system.
