Case Study – Scenic Glass Lift for Kew Gardens Treetop Walkway

Covering 120 hectares, Kew Gardens is London’s largest UNESCO world heritage site. One of the many highlights on offer is the Treetop Walkway. Standing at a height of 18 metres above the ground, the Walkway offers visitors to Kew Gardens an opportunity to experience the magnificent trees up close.

From this elevated vantage point, it’s possible to both survey the grandeur of the tree canopy, and examine the intricate ecosystem present in the uppermost branches of the trees, which is home to a variety of insects, birds, fungi, and lichen.

Tower Lifts Installs a Scenic Glass Lift at Kew

The 118 steps up to the treetop walkway are part of the adventure for many people, but for wheelchair users, or mobility impaired visitors they mean that the attraction is out of bounds. When Kew decided to introduce a lift to enhance access to the walkway, Tower Lifts was contracted to install it.

The new, scenic glass lift travels over 18 metres from the ground to the walkway, providing vertical transport for wheelchair users, mobility impaired visitors and anyone wishing to avoid the steep climb to the top of the steps.

Delivering on Our Client’s Brief

Tower Lifts installers worked to our client’s exacting technical and aesthetic specifications. There were a number of design challenges along the way, which were resolved efficiently and successfully by our engineers.

The end product achieves everything we aspire to create with every lift we install. It fulfils the function of vertically transporting visitors to the walkway, but – beyond that – the sleek, glass lift offers a memorable experience of travelling weightlessly through the canopy to achieve a new perspective, over the trees, on arrival.
