Case Study – Mezzanine Dumbwaiter for Bedford Distribution Centre

Case Study – Mezzanine Dumbwaiter for Bedford Distribution Centre

Mezzanine Lift Design Overcomes Tight Space Constraints

Anyone running distribution operation knows only too well that getting goods where they need to be, safely and quickly, is the major goal of the business. Sometimes, standard solutions don’t fit, especially when dealing with multiple mezzanine floors and tight spaces.

The team at Tower Lifts recently helped a local distribution centre near Bedford tackle this exact issue. They needed a compact goods lift – essentially a heavy-duty dumbwaiter or service lift – to move 100kg loads from the ground floor up four mezzanine levels. The challenge? (We love a challenge!) It had to fit into a very narrow gap, demanding absolute precision.

As a Bedfordshire-born company with over a decade specialising in both commercial dumbwaiter lifts and warehouse mezzanine goods lifts, Tower Lifts was perfectly placed to help. Here’s how we approached this unique mezzanine dumbwaiter lift design and installation.

The Challenge – Integrating a Goods Lift in a Semi-Automated Environment

Our client operates a busy, semi-automated distribution centre in South Bedfordshire, where efficient workflow is the priority. Their operations needed a safe and reliable way to move goods, weighing up to 100kg, from the ground floor dispatch area up to four distinct mezzanine levels above.

The ideal location identified was a narrow vertical gap between two existing mezzanine structures. This presented a significant technical challenge – designing and installing a suitable goods lift required absolute attention to detail and careful planning.

Both the lift itself and its bespoke structural supports had to be designed and specified with extreme precision – the tolerances were measured in millimetres – to fit perfectly between the existing mezzanine framework without interference.

A Tailored Lift Solution for Local Distribution Centre

The Tower Lifts team handled both the complex design phase and the on-site installation, to bring this solution its successful conclusion. Our client’s distribution business now benefits from a reliable, fully commissioned mezzanine goods lift, smoothly handling loads between the ground floor and the four mezzanines above.

We’re delighted to have been able to tailor a vertical transport solution, and we have future-proofed the lift by ensuring the installation included practical access panels for straightforward future maintenance and servicing.
